On Saturday, Aug. 31, the Los Alamos Public Library will host its third celebration of art, illustration, comics, costumes, superheroes, fantasy, and science fiction: ATOMICON!

Mesa Public Library will be filled with activities and events during library hours, from 10:00am until 5:00pm. There will be comic-themed crafts for all ages, workshops to explore illustration and zine building, and life drawing sessions to take in and show off the excellent costumes on display. Discussion panels will give insight into the creative process of professionals and provide to dig deeper into world-building.

Vendor Hall and Coyote & Crow at Fuller Lodge
Atomicon’s Vendor Hall is hosted at Fuller Lodge by the Los Alamos Arts Council from10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local artists and artisans from Los Alamos and the wider region will offer books, art, games, clothing, stickers, zines, and much more!

The Atomicon feature at Fuller Lodge will be special guest Weckiai Ranilla, Jeopardy champ and Coyote & Crow gamemaster, sponsored by Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse. Ranilla will offer two sessions to participate in a full play through of the award-winning game Coyote & Crow where players can immerse themselves in this science fantasy role playing game set in an uncolonized future. Players should register in advance on the library’s calendar to reserve a seat at the game table.

Workshops and Panels with Comics Professionals at Mesa Public Library
Workshops and speaker panels, featuring professional artists, comic illustrators, and writers—including Coyote & Crow’s Weyodi OldBear—will be held throughout the day.

Participants can choose from our Illustration Track or World-Building Track, or mix-and-match panels and workshops to build their own Atomicon experience.

The panels will culminate with a keynote speaker, Jeff Behnam, and a special Atomicon-focused presentation of “Truth, Justice, and the American: How Comics Animate Culture.”

Costume Contest
At the end of the day’s events, when con-goers have had the chance to share and display their best costumes, the awarding of prizes for our day-long costume contest will be held inside Mesa Public Library. Costumes of all kinds are encouraged and a panel of judges will be supported by open voting from all attendees.

The teams who have joined forces to bring these events include the non-profit comic collective 7000 BC, the Los Alamos Arts Council, the New Mexico Humanities Council, the Friends of the Los Alamos County Public Libraries, and Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse.
