Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.
The McCauley Springs Fire, reported on June 24, has closed NM4 near Valles Caldera National Preserve. Please check NPS and USFS websites before visiting to confirm if they are open.
In this lecture, Martin Moeller, an architectural curator, writer, and educator who organized the 2018-19 exhibition Secret Cities: The Architecture & Planning of the Manhattan Project at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., will discuss how wartime and postwar Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Hanford/Richland simultaneously reflected and influenced 20th-century trends in housing design, urban planning, construction technology, and architectural practice. He will show how these cities served as important proving grounds for emerging concepts of domestic life and community planning, making them worthy of preservation and active interpretation of their built legacy.
This event is part of the Los Alamos Historic Preservation Plan engagement series, inviting community members to explore and share input on the history, architecture, and preservation of Los Alamos County.
