Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.

Tsankawi, the detached unit of Bandelier National Monument, will be closed from Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to Thursday, March 5, 2026, for staging and moving of materials for a trails and visitor improvement project.
Materials for this project will be staged in the parking area starting on February 25. Beginning on March 2, 2026, a helicopter will be onsite to move the material from the parking lot to the mesa. During this time, Tsankawi will be unsafe for visitors to be in the area during this operation.
