Olympic Pool Reopening Delayed to January 2027

Los Alamos County’s Olympic-sized pool at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center is now expected to reopen in January 2027 due to manufacturing delays for custom pump and filtration parts. County staff briefed the County Council on construction progress on Oct. 6, 2026.

The pool resurfacing project had remained on schedule for completion in November 2026. However, the final plaster finish requires the pool to be filled with water to be cured properly. Given the condition of the existing pump and the planned replacement of the pump and filtration system scheduled in 2027, the project team determined that completing both projects during the current closure would reduce the risk of curing complications and avoid another prolonged closure.

Increased manufacturer demand and the time required to produce custom parts have delayed the anticipated reopening. The project team continues to explore ways to expedite the work. A temporary pumping system was considered but was not feasible.

The County will share an updated reopening timeline once shipment of the parts is confirmed. Staff are also reviewing options with regional indoor pool providers to offer alternatives for swimmers during the extended closure. Details will be announced once arrangements are finalized.
