Transit – 2024 Bandelier Service will be suspended beginning August 29

Atomic City Transit – 2024 Bandelier Service will be suspended beginning on Thursday, August 29.
Los Alamos, NM – Atomic City Transit has announced it will suspend its Bandelier shuttle service officially starting Thursday, August 29, 2024, due to a severe driver shortage. The transit system currently faces a 100% vacancy rate for drivers needed to operate the shuttle service. The final day of shuttle service will be Wednesday, August 28, 2024. However, Bandelier National Monument will remain open to visitors, who will be allowed to drive into Frijoles Canyon starting Thursday, August 29.
Public Works Director Juan Rael stated that the decision followed extensive deliberation and was necessary to prioritize the safety of both drivers and passengers. "Our shortage of trained drivers has forced supervisors and dispatch staff to take on driving duties as a temporary measure, which compromises their ability to train new hires effectively," Rael said. He added that the demanding seven-day schedule of the Bandelier service has further strained the remaining staff.
In light of the suspension, the White Rock Visitor Center will adjust its hours of operation, opening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting August 29.
Atomic City Transit is currently short seven regular drivers and six limited-term Bandelier drivers. Rael expressed gratitude to the dedicated team for their hard work and encouraged those interested in becoming drivers to apply via the county website.
